Project 365: Day 116

Aeolian-Skinner Organ

I took a lunch-time tour of Northrup Auditorium's Aeolian-Skinner organ today. Here is a little more history about the auditorium and the organ. It is a magnificent instrument. The intricacy of how it functions and the variety of sounds it can produce really impressed me. The photo above is of the console which is where the organ is played. The 700 or so pipes that make the sound are actually concealed 70 feet above the floor behind decorative grills. Some of the pipes are so large that a person could easily fit inside of them. Magnificent, indeed.
